Description

A decade ago, compelled by a dozen years of observations as an international journalist, I wrote the first edition of TRUE GRIT: Women Taking on the World for God’s Sake. I hoped that by the time this revised and updated SOS guide was published I could report sweeping advances in the status quo of girls and women worldwide. However, while some excellent human rights measures are being passed in many countries, efforts to enforce these new laws have been far from adequate. The tragic reality is that violence, trafficking and gender discrimination on many fronts is actually on the increase for millions of females living in the 21st Century.
SOS: SAVE OUR SISTERS is intentionally subtitled. An Action Guide for Helping Women and Girls At Risk Worldwide. This book does without the stories of international women included in TRUE GRIT; it is a streamlined, A to Z reference to the human rights issues most effecting half our world’s population. While this overview is not by any means comprehensive; it should serve as a useful guide and stimulus for further investigation.
My purpose in writing this SOS, however, is not just to inform. It is my fervent hope that the disturbing facts will spur readers into action. For many people the most obvious and powerful first response will be intercession, but groups and individuals are also urged to take the suggested “Action Steps.” Every voice, every letter of protest and every penny of support is critical if we are to join in solidarity against these widespread abuses, and effect change.
Be warned. Passionate prayers not only change the world, they have a way of transforming the people who pray them. As God channels His concern through you, you may find yourself responding in unexpected ways. I hope so. It’s time for us all to adopt the resolution so well expressed by activist and clergyman Edward Everett Hale:
“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but I can do something…. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do.”
